So long as we have started to think about next year, let’s re-evaluate the tees for seniors. We have a member or two that feel the “league” tees are just too long for them. Do we let these members just fall by the wayside? Is there any support for allowing anyone 65 and over to play from the next shortest set of tees as the league is playing? I want to thank everyone for the congrats but I do want to thank Mike and Doug for letting me take the lead. Oh and my last name is spelled FEY not FAY. See you on the course.
I was wondering when Rob would notice the typo in his last name. Rob, I had nothing to do with that, and I did not let you take the lead, you earned it! I am all for letting those 65 and older move to a closer tee box and I think someone from the group has said that once a senior decides to make that move it should be for the entire season. I support the rule change with the understanding that they always play from the closer tees.
Doug – I’m sure those who want to use the shorter tees appreciate your support, but why do you think they should be restricted to only those tees? When they join us for one of the shorter courses, they may wish to play from the same tees as the rest of us. Their course handicap is based on the tees from which they play, so I don’t understand your thinking on this.
Derek, Doug, and Rudy have been voted in as the 2013 Executive Committee. They will entertain any suggestions for league rule changes for the upcoming season (starting 1 April). Please make all suggestions on this BLOG.
I propose a rule change. If your ball lands in a UNRAKED BUNKER…foot print, water damage, you should get to lift, rake, and place. You would also need someone in your group to validate that it is a valid no shit someone was just lazy and did not rake.
I don’t have an objection to the sand trap rule. I also think that if there is water in the trap and you have to move your ball out of the water that you can place the ball instead of dropping. What is the point in dropping and plugging the ball in the bunker where you most likely have a worse lie than you had before. Comments are welcomed.
There is a item on the ballot proposing that if civilians are forced to take furloughs, that the league’s outing be change to that day – probably Friday. While I voted “yes”, I do have questions. First – I believe there are only 4 civilians in the league. Secondly – Does the time of the round remain in the afternoon, or moved to an earlier time and how will this affect the other members? The retirees may favor it, but not those still working as contractors. Morning rounds would not be to their liking. Still, do we want the possible Friday afternoon round infringing on our weekend activities. I don’t think I would. I’m just saying that it sounds like a valid proposal until you consider it from different viewpoints.
Although it is unfortunate that many players leave the traps a mess for the golfers behind them, I do not want to change our league rule to allow moving the ball out of a footprint. It is about the same as landing in a fairway divot that has not been filled with sand. In wet conditions, we should ask the club house if any sand trap rules are being played on the course and adjust accordingly.
I strongly support Prairie Dog. It’s callecd “rub of the green” or s#%t happens. A coupla weeks ago I landed not more than four feet from the green in short grass but not fairway and plugged nead a drain. No relief was allowed, just bad luck. If we’re going to move’em in the bunkers why not in fairway divots?
Golf has rules and we’ve discovereed before that if you start to bend them a little the next guy bends them even more. We use to have a root rule that said you didn’t have to hit off a root but people found roots everywhere until they were out from behind the tree was between them and the hole.
I was notified that if we (NAVSUP) furlough that my day will be Mondays. We are attempting to use Monday and Friday to split the workforce so Friday would not be good for me and that is how I voted. I also disagree with the Dog that a footprint is the same as a divot in the fairway. If the print is 4-6 inches deep in the sand it is nothing like a divot unless it is one that I left!!!
The only thing I have in defense of the proposed bunker rule is our bunkers are not raked for us.
Just like we have no ball spotters or replay cameras in lost ball situations.
In all the rainy pro golf I’ve seen I don’t recall a pro ever playing out of a bunker that was flooded to the point where he had to take a drop. So I support the bunker rule. Everything else is what it is.
I agree with Ron on the change to league play on Friday. Even though I voted for it, I thought I was doing a service to those still in the work force. Since then I have found the not all civilians will be furloughed on Fridays, so we would be excluded league members that are furloughed on other days. I add that during the summer, some will be going on trips beginning on Fridays. If league play will be on Fridays, I probably won’t play very many league rounds again this year, along with others. Look at this again, and let’s keep it on Wednesdays.
I am one that would not be furloughed on a Friday and I say leave it on Wednesdays unless it creates a hardship for those that will be furloughed to use leave to play.
I know that I would love to get relief from any situation that would improve my lie and possibly my round but I think we should just “play it where it lies”. There will be flooded bunker, rainy days, and some other exceptions but we have rules in place for those, so that my take on it. My game sucks anyway and I havent even picked up a club since November. I did move the bag from one spot to another in my garage though. As for the furloughs “we” here at CRG-2 haven’t got anyword on which day would be the day but we have seen one schedule that the shipyrad might use and NECC said days may be staggered. I will play either way but it will really depend on when and where the round is scheduled and how much time I would have to take off. If we did Friday’s as the league round would that not increase the cost of play? I always thought we got a better rate becuase of midweek?
Referring to the “re-thinking” on Fridays. Folks, this has been voted upon and is now “law” until a vote is taken to change it. Shame that hardly anyone visited or commented on this subject on this blog (which is why we have it here). I agree (and voted against) the Friday change. In all honesty, I suspect that since the thinking is that since we are off on Friday, the tee times will be moved to the morning which will make it that much harder for the Friday workers in play. On the other hand, I don’t the afternoon round to infringe on my weekend. Add to all of this, Fridays are generally more expensive than weekdays, and mornings are generally more expensive than afternoons. I trust that the executive committee will monitor this issue to determine if enough interest is generated to re-address this change.

By unanimous vote, the executive committee has voted that for the 2013 new rules:
The “short tees” rule will NOT be changed until next year’s voting cycle.
The “sand trap” rule will NOT be changed until next year’s voting cycle.
The “furlough day” rule will NOT be changed, until June 1, 2013 when the committee will revisit and decide on a revote.
By 2013 Executive committee, April 6, 2013 @ 10:10 am
Incorrect statements
“The rules say that to change a rule you need 50 percent of the voting membership in agreement”
“But did over 50%vote FOR it?”.
Wrong statement on both cases, nowhere in the rules does it state so. The correct statement is that “All changes to the League Rules must be approved by a vote of the membership. A majority of the voting members is required for any change.”.
This year we had 17 members vote and the “majority” (majority = greater than the opposite…..not by a number, just greater than) of the votes on each rule was approved……a majority even when one counts Mike C voting three times……
Another incorrect statement:
“It does not say that the handicap committee gets to decide what the league is entitled to vote on. That is not your right.”
Wrong again, the rules state “The committee will serve as a governing body for any and all matters of contention within the League” making it the responsibility of the committee to take all submissions and determines if an issue is “worthy” of a league vote.
When a submission was made for a possible re-vote the committee did just that……looked at the issues and determined that the rules will stand as voted by “majority”.
This year we show 28 league members, out of these 13 members to voted for the Executive Committee and 17 members voted for the league rule changes.
Rule results:
Rule 1 (over 65) rule passed 11 to 8 even with Mike C voting No 3 times
Rule 2 (sand trap) rule passed 10 to 9 even with Mike C voting No 3 times
Rule 3 (furlough) rule passed 10 to 6 even with Mike C voting Yes/No two times, No 1 time and Mike W voting Yes/No 1 time.
Hope this clears some of the concerns, and brings others to get more involvement in the process.
I think we hit a new low yesterday regarding screwed-up scorecards. Cards were submitted without the last hole score entered. Scores were not added. Scores were not added correctly. The afternoon cards were even worse. Any group of three or more players should be maintaining two cards – one per cart. Please keep scores for all playeers in your group. Verify the scores at the turn and at the end of the round. What am I suppose to do when I get two scorecards with differing scores?
Yesterday was a complete cluster. Derek made it perfectly clear how things were to proceed – basically the way we always proceed. The ONLY difference was that we were asked to tee-off a bit earlier to allow another group to follow ours. But as usual, there’s always the one member who has to try and outwit the system so that his interest are best served. You all know this and yet you let it occur. And, as much as I’d like to be critical of him, I am equally critical of those who allow him to do it. I suspect that no one was happy with the way things were handled – evidence with the arguments on the course that could be heard two fairways over. So, rather than enjoy a great day on a great course, we carried our anger on to the course – and for some of us, the scores reflected our displeasure. In all honesty, I wish I had simply gotten a refund and gone home. It’s times like these that I consider proposing a procedure to remove members from the league. Instead, I think I’ll just bow out for a few weeks. Meanwhile, I need someone to step-up and assume the administrative responsibilities of the league.
We really need to implement process so that when Derek secures 5 tee times, the signup is limited to 20 players. Something on the order of a signup deadline, or just limit signup to 20 players or 24 if 6 tee times are secured. I agree with you, Ron. I’ve already decided that the next time i show up 30 minutes prior to a tee time and we already have players on the course, i’m packing up and going home.
Ron I complety agree with you. This league is suppose to be a FUN league. Go out and golf and have a good time. Some people are so worried about a $4 bet that is makes it almost unbearable. We explained everything, we knew how many people were comming and yet we always have people who want to take over and do it their way. Yes we had to go early and it kinda screwed up the normal procedures, but the fact that someone jumps out of a car and then “someone” grabs him and makes him hurry and jump in the first group who is on the second hole when there are threesomes waiting to play is ridiculous all because you have your “buddy team” assembled. Another thing we always say is sign up ASAP to play. The last 3 weeks we have had to call the course to get more times because people wait until the last minute. How many people yesterday said “I thought we tee off at 2″….more proof most of you don’t even read the shit we put out but your the first to bitch about everything we do.
Let me add that if events like yesterday continue, i predict that participation in the league will suffer because of it. It should be fun, friendly competitive golf, not a snafu like yesterday.
Yes, it was a cluster and yes the scores showed it, but if we vote out members that do stupid things we end up with no one. I would think that after the whole fiasco yesterday, everyone knows what’s expected next time we tee off early. But I doubt it, why? Because we have had early tee-offs in the past and for each instance we did something different. Maybe we need a set of expectation that can help remove surprises…… example:
There are 5 tee times, you are number 23 on the sign-up sheet; expect that:
1. You will not be able to play because of lack of tee-times.
2. You will play with the 21st and 22nd signees outside the group’s tee-times.
You bring same guest to play with the group for more than one outing; expect that:
1. Next time the guest plays, his name will be pulled out of the hat like everyone else’s.
You show up 5 minutes before tee time; expect that:
1. The first group might already on the tee box.
2. You will play on the last group.
Nothing will cover all scenarios but at least gives all the baseline of what to expect when you get to the course and we are not all sitting there still waiting to tee off.
Yesterday when we started I was pissed off and angry with the whole fiasco, but today looking back I tend to laugh because that’s what this group is….bunch of guys that can’t agree on almost anything, too old to change for anyone, never takes the time to read what’s posted, frustrating to play with sometimes and just pain in the asses….but 99 out of 100 times they are a fun group of players that makes the whole league fun.
I think Rudy summed it up pretty well. It got a little hosed up and mistakes were made but overall it went O.K., everyone got to play. I know there were questions about who played with who but it wasn’t the first time that’s happened and probably won’t be the last. We had a system that will always work as long as everyone follows the rules but we’re not good at that so we’ll just have to live with inperfections. It’s a reasonably good group, just try and enjoy it.
Sure, yesterday was indeed a cluster. I’m pretty sure the jug head that decided to address the problem, from 50-60 yards wishes he’d been a little more circumspect in his approach. Alas, critical pressure seems to have been reached and the safety valve failed. I’m certain he’s a bit embarrassed.
Still…. I noticed that après golf, EVERYONE who expressed an opinion was as put out as was jug head. As Ron said, shame on all of us who have allow this situation to continue. Maybe now everyone will a bit more flexible and in the future try to just go with the flow a bit more graciously and follow our normal, simple procedure.
I also notice that that the retired guys seem to manage to avoid these kinds of problems. Maybe being retired they are just less stressed.
The bag had every ones balls in it accept the players that were not there. Which I believe if not there you go in the final group. Derek’s team was pulled and then the bag was handed to me. The second team was pulled which was Mike C, Mike F. and Doug also Doug’s Guest. Which by the way has been to M.B. with everyone just like Guy has. But Marc’s does not have a low handicap like my guest Jesse that has only played 4-5 times with the group. But anyway back to the balls. The third group was picked out by Bob C. and he picked his ball, Guy’s ball (that was in the bag) and my Ball. O my god three 11 handicappers’ in the same group, Yea I must have rig that. But nothing was said when Me, Clark and Doug were pulled two weeks prior to that and we won everything (was that because we all played good. Then the final three balls were picked out of the bag Roger, Dick, Herb. After that Arlen showed up and was put in the four Group then Larry came, Me and Bob started counting who’s left, we counted Ron, Bill Rob and Guest which made 5 so we said we need to get someone in the first group. Larry had just got there and so me and Bob said Arlen was the last to arrive put him in the first group. But that’s were me and Bob made the mistake which I will except the blame because if we would have counted Rudy and Guest then Arlen should have been left in the four group. Excuse me for not counting correctly and putting him in the first group. I went to Cahoon to have a good time like I do every week I enjoy it when I play with someone that is equal or better than me for the competition and to improve my game. I also enjoy playing with everyone else also. Did I go there to stack my team NO… Did I go there to pay $40.00 and get pissed off all day NO… Did My team get pulled out of the bag like everyone else’s did YES… Was Jesse my only Guest YES… Is he a good Player YES… I did nothing wrong and I got accused of it all. 1. Buddy team” assembled,
2. Outwit the system
3. People who want to take over and do it their way
4. It’s times like these that I consider proposing a procedure to remove members from the league.
Well you all don’t have to because I remove myself from Wed and MB. Sorry I caused all the problems.
EVERYONE has an opinion Steve and opinions our like assholes everyone has one. I only tried to tell you what happen 50 to 60 yards off the green but you had your opinion that wasn’t true and didn’t want to listen. I love the game of golf Steve and I try my best all the time, and some days are not as good as others. But that might have something to do with being near the top of league and having the most gross scores so far this year. But I DON’T RIG SHIT to my advanged I just try to play well and it doesn’t matter who’s on your team they all have to pull there points to win. Just like last week when my team pulled tons of points and I shot 77 GROSS, we still lost to your team because of your great game and Bob Coppets. Embarrassed for what trying to tell you what happen, NO. I am embarrassed that you have to stoop so low to call me names when I thought I was playing golf with some friends every week. I’m sorry for doing nothing and getting blamed for it all. But you won’t have to worry about that anymore.
The entire event on Wednesday was full of assumptions…..I for one assumed Guy was tagged as a Guest, also assumed that because I shot well on Monday I was going to shoot well on Wednesday. Well both of my assumptions were apparently wrong along with a few others….. so let’s all acknowledge that shit happens, no one is perfect (except for me) and move the fluck on.
How many times have we told our kids that once you commit to something you have to stick to it till the end….well as a member of the “Executive Committee”, I can tell you that the double secret rule (requires special coded ring to read) states that no one quits the league while in season.
So…..expect to see all your ugly mugs on the course on Wednesday.
I wasn’t there Wednesday- thank God! I was hauling mulch and bitching because I wanted to be playing golf.
I agree with Mike, we all make mistakes and in the heat of battle our mouths seem to over ride our asses.
I would hate to see anyone quit over something as meaningless
as this error and misunderstanding.
Maybe we all need to look at what we as individuals can do to improve our
Walters……go back and read Steve’s comments….HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF!!!! And by the way I was standing right next to Steve and when you come over and told him to “Shut the F*ck up”…gee I wonder why he would not listen to you…I would be calling you names too!!
Mike – I think Steve’s comments were directed to himself rather than you. Nevertheless, it is hoped that cooler heads have prevailed and that we’ve all learned (or been reminded) that things are not always as they appear. Although I will not be playng next Wednesday, I hope to see your name on a scorecard when they are turned in.
I sent the following to Mike W. I hopr he accepts it. I cerainly hope he continues to play!
Hey Mike, I want you to know that when I referred to “50-60 yards from the green” I was talking about myself. I was saying I shouldn’t have hollered at you from across the course. Honestly. I was saying that that was inappropriate behavior on the course and that I was embarrassed for doing so.
My apology to you if I sounded like I was talking about you.
Come on out and play on Wednesday. “This too will pass”!
I am in a state of confusion all the time so this was nothing different for me. I also think tempers were flaring due to sun spots, yeah thats it sun spots, so shrug it off and lets have fun and that means everyone. Everyone should know by now that I will most likely be a maybe for all outings until the morning of the outing. It is the nature of my job that I may or may not be able to get out and if I do it is usually later then I expected. As for teeing off early I do not really care if we do and I dont care if I am in the last group every round. For me its all about playing and with friends. To me this seemed to be real early. When my guest and I got there there was nobody in sight. The desk said all of the carts were out and everyone had tee’d off. I think if we have a tee time for lets say 2:30 the earliest we should tee off is 15 minutes. So you figure two groups might get off before the actual pro-shop assigned tee time. If they try to send us off before the 15 minute window we need to tell them “you assigned the time and thats the time we need to stick to because all players have not arrived yet” Anything greater then that 15 minutes would not give those who are running right on time or a little behind ample time to get there pay, get our clubs in a cart and get to the tee box before the group ahead is making their second shots. Okay so I don’t get to warm up shame on me my fault for running behind and I am sure I will warm up sooner or later. The only thing I can say is that if we were to change/make a rule that you had to sign-up by lets say 1600 on Tuesdays I would only play every now and then because I cannot commit to that due to the job thing, just saying. So lets all go out there and play golf, good, bad or indifferent lets play, have fun and enjoy each others company and idiosyncrasies. I now give up the soap box.

By 2013 Executive committee, April 5, 2013 @ 7:12 am

Well Done, Bravo Zulu, & Great job to the Executive Committee and Derek for the rules issues and setting up Albemarle.
By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, April 12, 2013 @ 11:08 am
I think we hit a new low yesterday regarding screwed-up scorecards. Cards were submitted without the last hole score entered. Scores were not added. Scores were not added correctly. The afternoon cards were even worse. Any group of three or more players should be maintaining two cards – one per cart. Please keep scores for all playeers in your group. Verify the scores at the turn and at the end of the round. What am I suppose to do when I get two scorecards with differing scores?
By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, June 6, 2013 @ 10:05 am
By Larry, June 6, 2013 @ 10:17 am
We really need to implement process so that when Derek secures 5 tee times, the signup is limited to 20 players. Something on the order of a signup deadline, or just limit signup to 20 players or 24 if 6 tee times are secured. I agree with you, Ron. I’ve already decided that the next time i show up 30 minutes prior to a tee time and we already have players on the course, i’m packing up and going home.
By Derek R, June 6, 2013 @ 10:23 am
By Larry, June 6, 2013 @ 10:26 am
Let me add that if events like yesterday continue, i predict that participation in the league will suffer because of it. It should be fun, friendly competitive golf, not a snafu like yesterday.
By Moonwalk, June 6, 2013 @ 11:06 am
By Derek R, June 6, 2013 @ 12:16 pm
Well said Mike!!!!
By Larry, June 6, 2013 @ 12:23 pm
Again, well said.. Ok, Executive Committee, earn your pay, time to fix this, get to work, etc….
By Clark, June 6, 2013 @ 12:24 pm
I think Rudy summed it up pretty well. It got a little hosed up and mistakes were made but overall it went O.K., everyone got to play. I know there were questions about who played with who but it wasn’t the first time that’s happened and probably won’t be the last. We had a system that will always work as long as everyone follows the rules but we’re not good at that so we’ll just have to live with inperfections. It’s a reasonably good group, just try and enjoy it.
By Doug, June 6, 2013 @ 1:21 pm
Earn what pay???? Why didn’t this crap happen last season when I wasn’t on the committee???
By Steve, June 6, 2013 @ 2:55 pm
Sure, yesterday was indeed a cluster. I’m pretty sure the jug head that decided to address the problem, from 50-60 yards wishes he’d been a little more circumspect in his approach. Alas, critical pressure seems to have been reached and the safety valve failed. I’m certain he’s a bit embarrassed.
By Steve, June 6, 2013 @ 3:06 pm
By Mike Walters, June 6, 2013 @ 4:09 pm
By Mike Walters, June 7, 2013 @ 6:40 am
By Moonwalk, June 7, 2013 @ 6:53 am
By Pat B., June 7, 2013 @ 9:01 am

By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, June 7, 2013 @ 9:20 am
Mike – I think Steve’s comments were directed to himself rather than you. Nevertheless, it is hoped that cooler heads have prevailed and that we’ve all learned (or been reminded) that things are not always as they appear. Although I will not be playng next Wednesday, I hope to see your name on a scorecard when they are turned in.
By Bob Coppock, June 7, 2013 @ 10:19 am
I do not make many comments, but I hope Mike Walters forgives us and will change his mine about Wednesday. He is a good competitor.

Herb, Roger and I had a nice day! Some times you just have to go with the flow and “Improvise” a little. Thanks to Derek for the hospitality.

Anyone have room for me or wish to carpool
next Wed.?
By Steve, June 8, 2013 @ 10:01 am
