Dues are due. Remember to include the names of 3 members to serve on the Executive/Handicap Board.

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, February 1, 2011 @ 8:57 am

Congratulations to the “3Ms” – Mike Clark, Mike Fuller, and Mike Walters on being elected to serve on the SPAWAR Golf League’s Executive Committee for 2011. They assume this responsibility immediately and will serve until 31 January 2012.
All suggestions/recommendations for rule changes should be directed to them. They will consider the proposed changes to determine if they are of interest to the majority of the league, create a ballot for voting, and administering the voting process.
An issue that was introduced earlier was the proposal that Mitch Brooks be invited to join the league.
Please ensure that all conversation regarding proposed issue be discussed on the league’s website under the blog titled “2011 Season Rule Change Proposals” (www.sscngolf.com).
Thanks to Bill Garner and Carl Niemann (and me) for serving on the committee for 2010.

Propose we adopt a common sense amendment that would allow new members to join (i.e. Mitch Brooks) that apparently noone has an objection to OR if that’s too iffy, to make an exception for him

  • By Jim Butler, February 2, 2011 @ 12:45 pm

Re Dick W’s suggestion of club tees, the SPAWAR golf assn is getting longer in the tooth by the minute. Club tees are there for a reason. Shorter for example, does not mean it’s not difficult enough. Second Dick’s suggestion that we use club tees. The better players are still the better players, just more fun for the older players who can’t hit it as far as they think they used to hit it. 🙂

  • By Bob Coppock, February 2, 2011 @ 3:45 pm

The average handicap is approximately 18-19. The courses say that above a 15 handicap you should be using the club tees. What is the ratio between the long hitters and the rest of the league, 7 or 8 players? Like everything else we do we should go with averages.

  • By Doug, February 3, 2011 @ 9:06 am

Mike Clark suggested a rule that if a player takes the maximum 6 strokes over par and picks up his ball without holing out, that he then becomes ineligible to win the low net money. While I agree that this could be an advantage for the very high handicappers in our league who choose to pick up when they reach the +6 score, if they choose to play until holed out, how much longer the rounds might become? Worth a possible vote though so I am bringing it up.

  • By Werkmeister, February 3, 2011 @ 2:32 pm

I’m for using the club tees at all league matches.

  • By Mike Walters, February 3, 2011 @ 4:16 pm

propose that anyone over the age of 65 play club tee’s all the time anyone under the age of 65 has to play the closest to 6250 tees

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, February 8, 2011 @ 12:45 pm

I checked a few sites on the internet to get a good ruling on what tees we should be playing. A common suggestion was to take your normal 5-iron distance and multiply it by 36. That will give you the distance of the tees you should be playing. For me, it’s 160×36=5760. So, I should be playing the closest to 5760 yards. As a league, our average handicap is 19.91. That would be put us at the “white” tees (which could vary quite a bit from course to course – if they have white tees). Even worse is the fact that taking the average course handicap for all of last year’s league rounds is 22.7. We’re getting closer to the foward tees. The point is – do we play from where we SHOULD BE playing or where we WANT to play? I don’t know everyone’s age, but looking at last year’s league average for the four that I know are over 65, their averages were 71.43, 72.76, 77.63, and 78 for an average of 74.9. They also managed to win low-net 14 times out of the 24 league rounds we played. Maybe we should insist that they play the back tees!!!!!!!!!

  • By Doug, February 8, 2011 @ 4:15 pm

Maybe we should ask everyone in the league how far they hit their 5 iron, average it out and multiply that by 36. I don’t want to play from tees over 6600 yards! 6250 is fine with me, and now that the stats have been published, the old guys need to play from there as well!

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, February 9, 2011 @ 6:03 am

Unless the league averages 183 yards with a 5-iron, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about 6600 yards.

  • By Larry, February 9, 2011 @ 9:13 am

14 out of 24!!,, kinda hard to argue with those kind of stats, leave it as it is.

  • By Doug, February 28, 2011 @ 10:53 am

When will the committee put out the 2011 rule suggestions to be voted on? Shouldn’t it be before the start of our season?

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, February 28, 2011 @ 11:12 am

Doug – Taking a look at what has been submitted by the league on this blog, it does not appear that anything is of interest to the league. One, two, or three members suggesting a change does not warrant a vote by the membership. If we have members who want changes and have not submitted anything on this blog, then it must not have been very important to them.

  • By Larry, February 28, 2011 @ 5:40 pm

I want to second Mike Clark’s suggestion on not being eligible for low net if a player picks up on a hole. Also, a re-look how we accept someone into the league, i.e., the Mitch Brooks rule. Once nominated for membership, put it to the league for a vote, in or out. And, leave the tees were they are.

  • By Doug, March 1, 2011 @ 12:04 pm

Ron, I would think that if more than 2 members have suggested the same thing (ie moving the tee boxes) then that should be voted on. If there is a minimum requirement or count as to how many members it takes to suggest a vote on something, I was unaware of that. At the very least I think the commitee should decide if something should be put to vote if suggested by more than 1 or 2 members.

  • By Larry, March 1, 2011 @ 3:30 pm

    I agree with Doug.

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, March 3, 2011 @ 8:54 am

The Executive Committee determines if an issue is “worthy” of a league vote. Considering we have a league of 28 members and only 4 members who have an issue with the tees, 1 with an issue regarding membership eligibily, and 2 who want to disqualify a player for picking up the ball for the maximum score, it doesn’t seem that there is much interest in changing the rules. However, if the committee deems that a vote is appropriate, so be it.

  • By Larry, March 31, 2011 @ 11:35 am

Well, are the 3 Mikes doing anything about the proposals put forth prior to the start of league play?

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, June 15, 2011 @ 8:18 am

Not sure everyone is up-to-snuff on the new way to register for the weekly rounds. On this website (www.sscngolf.com), click on the “Outings” tab at the top of the page. A sign-in page will be displayed where you enter your name and option buttons to indicate in you intend to play that week. Additionally, there is a link available right above the name box which will list the entries of everyone who has registered. Any questions – call Rudy or Ron.

Regret to pass along that we have to remind a few of the rules. Apparently some infractions were noted during the round at VB National on 6/8. We do not “roll” the ball. Play it where it lays. If it’s in a divot – sorry. Don’t make your partners/members/friends have to watch you. If you’re not sure of a rule – ask. If you see an infraction – address it then, not after the round.

  • By Robert Hodges, June 19, 2011 @ 5:51 pm

This is the first year that I remember that the complaints about the rules are not in the fore front.
I have always favored playing out the hole. And never liked the “take two strokes and drop it on the fairway” thing on an OB shot. I do in fact like to play an OB again from the spot I hit it. And more often than not will do just that.

As for kicked balls and the sort. The games foundation is straight up honesty. And pride taken in a good score or any score for that matter is tempered by the adhearence to the rules. What spans the difference between a 30 handicap and a scratch golfer is character.

  • By Werkmeister, August 30, 2011 @ 11:51 pm

I still would like a vote on the Club Tee’s for 2012 season!
    Dick

  • By Doug, August 31, 2011 @ 10:59 am

If we don’t post who is coming on the news section, how are we going to know what everyones handicap is prior to play?

  • By Rudy, August 31, 2011 @ 11:03 am

    Look again….the handicaps are posted.

  • By Doug, August 31, 2011 @ 10:32 pm

Yeah I noticed that right after I made my last post. No biggie!

  • By Bobby (Best Ball) Hodges, September 19, 2011 @ 12:17 pm

Kind of slow here 31AUG last post?

Thanks to Larry, Ron and Mike Walters for keeping the games and the stats going. Larry, you again picked some fine venues.

The “Best Ball” thing came from Ron Williams. I still rather like “Bad News”. Whatever…………..

P.S. Tidewater found my Sky Caddie SGX. They are returning via UPS. In the end something besides three birds in a row went well for me.

Just a reminder to the 2-3 members who actually go to this site: Our End-of-Season Tournament is a 1-day, 2-round affair. Any member can win the tournament, but you must play both rounds to qualify. After our final league round next Wednesday, Rudy will have the website set up so that you can sign-up for either, or both of the tournament rounds. If you get the chance, take a look at our rules (Under the Rules tab) regarding the tournament.

  • By Ron "The Hammer" Williams, September 27, 2011 @ 6:35 am

New tab on the League’s website: “REPORT SCORES”. Rudy has made it an easy task to report your non-league scores. Click on the “REPORT SCORES” tab and enter the appropriate data in each of the fields displayed. Be sure that the data entered is correct and complete as this info will populate a spreadsheet from which Ron will draw for handicap calculations. Any questions, give Rudy a call at 443-0184.

  • By Larry, October 6, 2011 @ 10:13 am

Rudy, Gonna change the Champion banner on first page? Only have to change half of it, seems Larry REPEATED!!

  • By Doug, October 6, 2011 @ 11:32 am

Another great season! Thanks to Mike, Mike, Mike, Rudy, and Ron for all the work they did/do! Hopefully I won’t have any back issues when the season starts again to make a run at ending Larry’s 2 year run as league champ.

  • By Bobby (Best Ball) Hodges, October 6, 2011 @ 1:01 pm

Thanks to Mike Clark for basically feeding us after the round. Ron Williams shot a 71…..gross? There is still hope for me to make the seniors tour 🙂
Congrats. Ron, awesome round. As well as Malcoms 96.

Thanks to Mike (Lets Make A Deal) Fuller for course selection and holding the line of price all season long.

Also, there should be a “Gross Net” catagoery. Too many of our better golfers shoot in low 80’s and receive nothing for their above avarage play. That’s just not right. And this is coming from a “high handicapper”.
What incentive is there to get better?

As for changing the tees. If we have individuals who qualify to use senior tees, let them. It’s not going to hurt anyones chances at winning.

  • By Larry, October 7, 2011 @ 11:44 am

    Well said, Bobby.
