Even though I am not pursuing the nomination for Executive Committee of the league, I am willing to run and serve if elected.

This is not in our Rules, so I’m wondering how the practice of not holing a putt has become the norm of the day. If the ball is that close to the hole, then there should be no problem with completing and properly finishing the hole. One group declares if the ball is within a grip’s distance to the hole – pick it up. Another group has a different rule. Anything that is subjective creates an inconsistent outcome. Just make the putt!!!

While this is not a “rule” item, I would like to see the practice of gimme’s given/taken when the ball is anywhere up to two feet from the hole. Make your putt!!!

I think the reason we normally “give” putts is to save a little bit of time, or if a person is lying eight and putting for a nine. However, I agree with Ron in that we need to be consistent across the board. One alternative to putting them all could be to putt them if the putt affects the team points. Of course, that’s about 98 percent of all putts. My favorite option is if you’re 77 or older, getting it “close” to the hole is good enough, as it takes a lot of effort to reach all the way down to the bottom of the hole.

Now that I think back, I suggest that we started picking up the ball when it was close to the cup is because retrieving the ball with the flag in the hole was a PITA. It’s just that we start with allowing a “pickup” when the ball is within 6 inches and by the time we get to the end of the round, “pickups” are given at a foot and a half away. And, we all know occasions where we have botch that putt.

REPOST FROM 2021
In a normal league golf season we play for 6 months (April 1 to September 30). Most years this provides an opportunity for members to play up to 26 leagues. In 2020 we had 2 rainout weeks, so there were 24 league rounds. Under current rules, to be league champion you must play in 10 league rounds to quality as Champion. If you play in 10 or more rounds you can drop your worse round in calculating league champion.
Under our current system, playing fewer rounds can be used as a benefit to a player that plays less. If a player is in the running for the league title, they can sit out the more challenging courses, or days with challenging weather conditions. Players that play 11 or 12 rounds and delete a bad score, potentially have an advantage over players that post 20 or more scores. I do not believe it is unreasonable for a player to become league champion be required to play in half the league rounds. I also believe the new 2020 rule of dropping a score was a failed experiment which resulted in gamesmanship. I think our goal should be to encourage league play.
Rule Change 1. To be league champion a player must compete in half or more of the league rounds played. (In 2020, that number was 12 due to rainouts).
Rule Change 2. Eliminate the rule which allows a player to drop a score if they play a certain number of rounds.
This next section addresses league dues, finances, payouts, and out end of the season tournament.
In 2020 we had several of our regular league players opt out of joining the league because they knew in advance that they would not be playing enough league rounds to qualify for being champion, or some continue to pay for the end of the season tournament (prize money and food), without ever playing in the tournament. We also have an aging league, and many players are physically unable to complete two rounds in a day without paying a price to their bodies.
I am proposing that we take the Liberty Mutual approach, “Pay for what you want”. This would require us to first pay our bills, then separate league dues from tournament fees and tournament food and drink.
In 2020, Rudy paid $57.91 so we can have the SSCN domain name ($17.99) and site hosting costs ($57.91). The league waiver his $20 membership fee. This does not need to be a rule change, but we need to pay our bills first. Non-members are receiving a free benefit of using our site, including handicap tracking services as well in some cases.
Rule Change 3. League membership fees are set at $15. After league expenses are paid by the Executive Committee, the remaining funds will be awarded to the top 3 league finishers. 1st place will receive 50 % of the remaining fundings, 2nd place 30%, and 3rd place 20%.
So, if there there are 24 league members we would collect $360. $60 would go for expenses, $150 to first, $90 to 2nd, and $60 to 3rd. It eliminates all guess work and decision making. Those not joining the league will not be tracked in our standings, nor will their handicaps maintained by Bob. Non-league members will not be eligible to play in the End of Season tournament.
Rule Change 4. The end of season tournament is only available to paid league members. No guests.
End of season tournament.
This is the primary reason that most members do not want to serve on the Executive Committee. This is where the real work of the Executive Committee happens. A one day event with 2 rounds of golf and a cookout following is becoming a bit too much.
Rule Change 5. The End of Season tournament will be played as a two day event. The first round will be played on the last day of our regular season. It will count in the regular season standings, but will also count in tournament standings. Those desiring to play will pay $5.00. The 2nd round will be played on the Friday following league play, or as soon thereafter, as determined by the Executive Committee. Payouts will be 50/30/20 percent of funds collected.
So, if you have 20 players and collect $100, the winner gets $50, 2nd place $30, and 3rd place $20. A league member that is unable to play in the 1st round of the tournament, can still play in the second round and will not be charged a fee or considered in the standings.
End of season cookout or dining event. If the tournament become a 2 day event, we should have plenty of time for social events. Food and drink can be at the course with each member playing for what they want. We can go to a nearby restaurant/bar, or if someone wants to host a cookout, each member pays a fee ($10), and the host makes the arrangements. If you do not want to participate, you do not sign up and pay for the cookout.
